Company History

Robert M. Kelley always had a love for flying, buying a plane before entering Purdue University. After graduating with a degree in Aeronautical Engineering, he opened a flight school in Chickasha, Oklahoma. There, he sold new J-3 Piper Cubs for less than $1,500 and taught many students to fly.

Bob went to work for Boeing as an engineer in the late 1940’s, but never lost his penchant for light aircraft. As the years passed, he amassed a collection of manuals, test equipment, and instrument cores. What started as a hobby became an obsession, and eventually led to a new career.

Kelley Instruments, Inc. officially opened its doors in 1971 as a FAA certified repair station. Bob Kelley’s goal was to offer the highest quality possible, always at fair market prices. Unconditional customer satisfaction was his guiding philosophy.
Kirk Ellis took over when Bob Kelley passed away in 1978. He was passionate about flying, and soon became well known throughout the general aviation community. The company continued to thrive for 25 years under Kirk’s leadership, until his untimely passing in 2004. Today, the company is led by Kirk’s sons, Nick & Tyler Ellis, and still provides the same high-quality work and customer service that has been trusted for 40 years.
